Garage Door Cable and Roller Repair in Vancouver

Loose cables, crooked doors and noisy rollers, explained

When a lift cable snaps or a roller slips out of its track, the door can hang crooked or jam partway up. These parts work under spring tension, so a jammed door is safer left where it stopped. Across Metro Vancouver, call (604) 216-9380 to get a quote on cable, roller, track or panel repairs from Garage Door Repairs Vancouver.

What are the signs of a cable, roller or track problem?

You can check for each of these from inside the garage, with the door still and the opener left alone.

  • A steel cable hangs slack, has come off, or looks frayed near a bottom corner of the door.
  • The door sits crooked, with one side lower than the other, or tilts as it moves.
  • A roller has popped out of the side track, or the door has jumped the track and stuck.
  • The door grinds, scrapes or rattles on its way up and down.
  • One section of the door is dented, cracked or bent inward.

What does it mean when a garage door comes off its track?

An off-track door has one or more rollers outside the metal rail that guides it. The door can no longer travel straight and may jam at an angle. It is still hanging from cables and springs under load, which is why forcing it back is risky.

Stored spring tension is what makes cable work hazardous. DASMA, the US door industry association, advises leaving repairs like this to people trained in door systems. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission says doors that bind or stick "should be serviced by a professional."

What not to do with an off-track door

  • Running the opener to drive the door up or down
  • Pulling, prying or hammering rollers back into the rail
  • Pulling the red release cord while the door is partly open; keep that for a door that is fully down
  • Letting anyone walk or park under the door

If the door is stuck open and you can't secure the garage, start with the emergency garage door repair guide.

What happens when a lift cable snaps or slips?

That corner of the door loses its lift. The door drops lower on the broken side and can wedge in the opening. A cable that has slipped off its drum looks much the same from the floor.

The cable is still tied into the spring system, so leave it as it hangs. The stored-tension warning above applies here too.

Sometimes the fault turns out to be the spring rather than the cable. The garage door spring repair page covers torsion and extension springs in detail.

Why is my garage door grinding or rattling?

A grinding, scraping or rattling door has something rubbing or loose, and the rollers are one of the first places to check. Rollers are the small wheels on the edges of each section that run inside the side tracks.

A roller that is worn, cracked or seized no longer turns cleanly, and the door drags along the rail instead of rolling. A bent rail does the same thing from the other side. If the sound comes from the opener rather than the tracks, that points to a different fault. Garage door industry guidance links a humming or grinding motor, or a burning smell, to opener failure. The opener repair page covers that.

Noise that has crept up over months is a good reason to look into garage door maintenance.

Does a dented panel mean you need a new door?

Not necessarily: a single dented or cracked section can be swapped out on its own. The price for one panel in the table below comes from a Canada-wide HomeStars guide. None of the Metro Vancouver price pages checked list one.

Before you decide, ask whether a matching section is still made in your door's style, size and colour. If several sections are damaged, or the door has other problems as well, compare the cost with a new garage door installed.

How much does garage door cable repair cost in Vancouver?

Replacing a pair of lift cables typically costs $150 to $350 in Metro Vancouver. Rollers, track realignment for an off-track door, and a single panel are priced separately, as below.

Typical Metro Vancouver cable, roller, track and panel prices
RepairTypical range
Lift cables, pair$150 to $350
Rollers, full set$50 to $220
Off-track door, track realignment$100 to $350
One damaged panel replaced (Canada-wide figure)$350 to $900

Typical Metro Vancouver market ranges, 2026, before tax. Where these prices come from

Fewer companies publish roller and track prices than cable prices, so treat those two rows as rougher estimates. The full garage door repair cost guide has springs, openers and new doors. Cable and roller repairs are quoted across the region, from garage door repair in Richmond to Langley.

Cable, roller and track questions

What makes a door come off its track?

Industry guidance lists three common causes. Something is left in the path of the track, the track is bent or damaged, or the rollers have popped out.

Is it a cable problem or a spring problem?

Look at the bar above the door first. A torsion spring that has snapped shows a clear split in its coil. If the springs look whole but a cable is slack or off its drum, the cable is the likely fault. Sometimes both have failed, so describe what you see when you call (604) 216-9380.

Is a frayed cable urgent?

Yes. Arrange the repair soon rather than keeping an eye on it. Until then, keep people and cars out from under the door.

Does living near the water matter for tracks and rollers?

It can, because damp and salt air are hard on metal hardware. The maintenance guide covers rust and salt care for tracks and rollers.

Does my strata have a say in a new panel?

It may. A strata can control garage door style, colour or replacement. Check your bylaws and ask the strata before ordering a panel that changes how the door looks.
