What should I do first when my garage door gets stuck?
Make the area safe before you try anything else. Move people, kids, pets and cars away from the opening, and stop pressing the remote or wall button. A door that is jammed partway can shift without warning.
A broken torsion spring can let a door fall fast, and door safety guidance warns that this can cause serious injury. The springs and cables hold a lot of stored tension. The door industry association DASMA and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission both point homeowners to trained door professionals for this kind of repair, so it is not a job to take on yourself.
Why won't my garage door close?
A door that refuses to close is most often stopped by its safety sensors, something in its path, or a problem in the track. Openers built since the early 1990s have photo-eyes near the floor that stop and reverse the door when the beam is broken.
A sensor fault usually shows as a door that starts down and then goes back up. The sensor checks on the opener page cover the safe fixes.
If the sensors look fine and the track is clear, the fault is in the opener itself: see opener repair in Vancouver.
Why won't my garage door open?
A door that won't open is usually down to the remote, the power, the emergency release, or a broken spring. Start with the easy checks and work toward the serious ones.
Try the wall button
If the wall button opens the door but the remote does not, the remote batteries are the likely cause.
Check the power
Make sure the opener is plugged in, then check the breaker and any GFCI outlet that may have tripped.
Look at the release cord
If the motor runs but the door does not move, the red emergency release may have been pulled. It disconnects the door from the opener.
Look for spring trouble
A loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the coil above the door, or a door that feels very heavy points to a broken spring.
If you see signs of a broken spring, leave the door where it is and read about garage door spring repair before anyone touches it. Humming, grinding or a burning smell from the opener points to a motor problem rather than the door.
How do I open a garage door manually?
Check the springs first. Then use the red emergency release cord, which disconnects the door from the opener so it can be moved by hand (US Consumer Product Safety Commission). As a precaution, pull the red release cord only when the door is fully closed; door care guides advise this because a door with a broken spring may come down hard.
If you see a gap in a spring coil or a loose cable, leave the door down and call (604) 216-9380 instead of lifting it.
My door is stuck open overnight. How do I keep the house secure?
Treat the garage as an open room and secure the house around it. These are general, common-sense steps, not a substitute for getting the door fixed:
- Lock the door between the garage and the house, and any deadbolt on it
- Lock any car parked inside and take the keys and the remote indoors
- Bring bikes, tools and other valuables into the house or out of view
- Leave an outside light on if you have one over the driveway
- Don't try to pull the door down by hand or prop it with anything
Then call (604) 216-9380 or send the form with what happened and where you are.
When should I call right away instead of waiting?
Call straight away if anything about the door points to a spring, cable or track failure. These parts carry the weight of the door, and the CPSC warns that an unbalanced door could crash to the floor. Stop using the door until it has been looked at.
A door that has come off its track or is hanging by a loose cable is covered on the page about garage door cable and off-track repair.
Does an emergency garage door repair cost more after hours?
It depends on the company. Some Metro Vancouver companies add an after-hours or weekend charge of $165 to $250, while others do not publish a surcharge.

Emergency garage door questions
My door still works but makes a loud noise. Should I keep using it?
No, it is safer to stop. Squeaking or rusty coils, a door that opens slowly while the opener strains, and one side lifting ahead of the other are warning signs that often come before a spring breaks. These signs often come before a spring breaks, so have the door checked rather than waiting.
How do I reconnect the door to the opener after pulling the release?
With the door fully closed, re-engage the trolley on the opener rail, then run the opener once and watch the door. If it struggles, stops, or you spot a damaged spring or cable, leave it disconnected and call.
Can I push an off-track door back into place myself?
It is not recommended. The door is still hanging from springs and cables under load, and forcing it by hand can make it drop. Leave it where it is, keep clear, and have the track realigned.
Can wet weather make a garage door stick?
It can. Damp rusts metal hardware over time, and a door that binds should be looked at. See garage door maintenance in a wet climate for what to check.
How much will my emergency repair cost?
It depends on what broke. A matched pair of torsion springs typically runs $350 to $700 and a pair of lift cables $150 to $350 in Metro Vancouver, before tax; the after-hours row above shows the possible surcharge. Call or send the form for a price on your door. Other repairs are listed in the Vancouver garage door cost guide.
